Antarctica's Larsen C Ice Shelf Finally Breaks, Releases Giant Iceberg
July 12, 2017
From: http://www.pbs.org

After months of expectation, a gigantic piece of the Larsen C ice shelf broke off Antarctica sometime between Monday and Wednesday, scientists at the Swansea University-led Midas project announced Wednesday. The final split was detected by NASA's Aqua satellite and freed a trillion ton iceberg into the waters of the Weddell Sea.

"The iceberg is one of the largest recorded and its future progress is difficult to predict. It may remain in one piece but is more likely to break into fragments," Adrian Luckman, lead investigator of the MIDAS project, said in a statement. "Some of the ice may remain in the area for decades, while parts of the iceberg may drift north into warmer waters." Read more

Beam Me Up, Scotty! Scientists Teleport Photons 300 Miles Into Space
July 12, 2017
From: https://www.theguardian.com

Chinese scientists have teleported an object from Earth to a satellite orbiting 300 miles away in space, in a demonstration that has echoes of science fiction. The feat sets a new record for quantum teleportation, an eerie phenomenon in which the complete properties of one particle are instantaneously transferred to another - in effect teleporting it to a distant location. The Mysterious Sound Only Canadians Can Hear
June 8, 2017
From: https://news.vice.com

It's a low rumbling that rattles window panes and keeps locals up at night. Although no one can seem to pinpoint what, exactly, is causing a mysterious hum that has plagued residents of Windsor, Ontario, for years, one theory in particular has taken hold. The factories on Zug Island, which sits in the Detroit River and is closely guarded by Homeland Security, are likely the culprit. When Canadian researchers tasked with solving the mystery tried to get onto the island, they were turned away by the American government. Read more

The Red Dots Campaign will target Ross 154, Barnard’s Star, and Proxima Centauri, three red dwarfs within ten light years of our solar system. Hey, you: Want to help search for potentially habitable worlds around nearby alien suns? 'Course you do. Well, on Monday, the Pale Red Dot Campaign, the team behind last year's discovery of the closest known exoplanet to our own solar system—Proxima b—launched a new initiative, with a focus on citizen science. Mastodon Bone Findings Could Upend Our Understanding of Human History
April 26, 2017
From: http://www.nbcnews.com

Paleontologists have dug up a 130,000-year-old mastodon skeleton that looks like it was smashed apart by humans. But they found it in America, where people were not supposed to have arrived for another 100,000 years. How could that have happened?

The researchers say they think early humans must have come to America much, much earlier than anyone ever thought. They suggest that other scientists start looking for evidence of people in places they never bothered looking before. If the conclusions are confirmed, they will turn North American archaeology upside down.Read more

NASA Thinks Aliens Are Hiding On Europa So It's Sending A Spaceship To Find Them
February 10, 2017
From: http://www.news.com.au

EUROPA is a frozen moon of Jupiter which looks totally inhospitable and barren, but might be hiding an amazing secret. NASA believes there's a gigantic ocean locked beneath its frozen surface and is planning to send a robotic craft to see if aliens are swimming in it. This week, the space agency has revealed its three goals for the upcoming search for life.

It wrote: "The primary goal is to search for evidence of life on Europa. The other goals are to assess the habitability of Europa by directly analysing material from the surface, and to characterise the surface and subsurface to support future robotic exploration of Europa and its ocean."
