Paranormal Radio Host Art Bell Dies Aged 72
April 15, 2018
From: https://www.unexplained-mysteries.com

The former Coast to Coast AM radio host reportedly died on Friday at his home in Pahrump, Nevada. Born in 1945, Bell developed an interest in radio from a young age and became a fully licensed amateur radio operator at just 13. He served as a medic during the Vietnam War and operated a pirate radio station at Amarillo Air Force Base during his spare time.

After leaving the military, he moved to the Japanese island of Okinawa where he worked as a DJ for KSBK - a non-military english-speaking station. During this time he earned a Guinness World Record and raised money to help Vietnamese orphans by staying on air for 116 hours and 15 minutes.

After returning to the United States, he studied engineering at the University of Maryland for a time before dropping out and returning to radio. In 1978 he started a new political call-in show known as West Coast AM. In 1988, he and Alan Corberth rebranded the show Coast to Coast AM and the rest, as they say, is history. Read more

Astronaut's DNA No Longer Matches That of His Identical Twin, NASA Finds
March 14, 2018
From: https://www.cnn.com

Spending a year in space not only changes your outlook, it transforms your genes. Preliminary results from NASA's Twins Study reveal that 7% of astronaut Scott Kelly's genes did not return to normal after his return to Earth two years ago.

The study looks at what happened to Kelly before, during and after he spent one year aboard the International Space Station through an extensive comparison with his identical twin, Mark, who remained on Earth. NASA has learned that the formerly identical twins are no longer genetically the same. Read more

Woman Sues California Over Bigfoot Sighting
February 18, 2018
From: https://www.unexplained-mysteries.com

Claudia Ackley has taken it upon herself to sue the state for refusing to acknowledge the existence of Bigfoot.

Ackley, who is from Crestline, had been out hiking with her two daughters along a trail near Lake Arrowhead back in March 2017 when the two girls spotted an unusual figure in a nearby tree.

"They're standing right there frozen looking at something," she said. "He looked like a Neanderthal man with a lot of hair. About 800 pounds."

"I was trying to tell it to please not hurt us, and that's when he just stared at me."

She called 911 to report the sighting but was told that what they had seen was most likely a bear.

Now she is suing the state of California, as well as the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, for refusing to acknowledge the creature's existence.

"This was no bear. I know what I saw," she said. Read more

Scientists Find Evidence of Thousands of Planets in Distant Galaxy
February 5, 2018
From: https://gizmodo.com

Until now, scientists haven't detected any planets outside of our own Milky Way Galaxy--it's simply been too difficult to discern such small things from so far away. That should make you wonder: are there any planets outside the Milky Way? A new paper might be able to answer that question.

Researchers at the University of Oklahoma looking at a galaxy 3.8 billion light years away spotted evidence of planets. More specifically, they think that there should be at least 2,000 objects, ranging from moon- to Jupiter-sized, per main-sequence star in the galaxy, based on how the galaxy's gravity warped the objects behind it. This is not direct evidence, mind you; no one has spotted any actual planets. But it's evidence nonetheless. Read more

Scientists Discover Ancient Mayan city Hidden Under Guatemalan Jungle
February 3, 2018
From: https://www.theguardian.com

Researchers using a high-tech aerial mapping technique have found tens of thousands of previously undetected Mayan houses, buildings, defence works and pyramids in the dense jungle of Guatemala's Peten region, suggesting that millions more people lived there than previously thought.

The discoveries, which included industrial-sized agricultural fields and irrigation canals, were announced on Thursday by an alliance of US, European and Guatemalan archaeologists working with Guatemala's Mayan Heritage and Nature Foundation.

The study estimates that roughly 10 million people may have lived within the Maya Lowlands, meaning that kind of massive food production might have been needed.

"That is two to three times more [inhabitants] than people were saying there were," said Marcello A Canuto, a professor of anthropology at Tulane University. Read more

No, you're not crazy. Those loud booms you've been hearing? The city of Springfield wants to know more about them. City spokeswoman Cora Scott said Wednesday that the city has received two formal service requests and nine calls about the booms in the past few weeks. And after more booms were heard early Wednesday morning, many more people are chirping about the booms on social media.

Scott said the city wants residents who have "experienced hearing or feeling" the booms to contact them with the exact time, date and location. Residents can call 864-1010, email city@springfieldmo.gov or post on the city's Facebook page. Read more

Glowing Auras and 'Black Money': The Pentagon's Mysterious U.F.O. Program
December 16, 2017
From: https://www.nytimes.com

In the $600 billion annual Defense Department budgets, the $22 million spent on the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program was almost impossible to find. Which was how the Pentagon wanted it.

For years, the program investigated reports of unidentified flying objects, according to Defense Department officials, interviews with program participants and records obtained by The New York Times. It was run by a military intelligence official, Luis Elizondo, on the fifth floor of the Pentagon's C Ring, deep within the building's maze.

The Defense Department has never before acknowledged the existence of the program, which it says it shut down in 2012. But its backers say that, while the Pentagon ended funding for the effort at that time, the program remains in existence. For the past five years, they say, officials with the program have continued to investigate episodes brought to them by service members, while also carrying out their other Defense Department duties.

The shadowy program - parts of it remain classified - began in 2007, and initially it was largely funded at the request of Harry Reid, the Nevada Democrat who was the Senate majority leader at the time and who has long had an interest in space phenomena. Most of the money went to an aerospace research company run by a billionaire entrepreneur and longtime friend of Mr. Reid's, Robert Bigelow, who is currently working with NASA to produce expandable craft for humans to use in space. 2 Navy Airmen and an Object That 'Accelerated Like Nothing I've Ever Seen'
December 16, 2017
From: https://www.nytimes.com

Cmdr. David Fravor and Lt. Cmdr. Jim Slaight were on a routine training mission 100 miles out into the Pacific when the radio in each of their F/A-18F Super Hornets crackled: An operations officer aboard the U.S.S. Princeton, a Navy cruiser, wanted to know if they were carrying weapons.

"Two CATM-9s," Commander Fravor replied, referring to dummy missiles that could not be fired. He had not been expecting any hostile exchanges off the coast of San Diego that November afternoon in 2004.

Commander Fravor, in a recent interview with The New York Times, recalled what happened next. Some of it is captured in a video made public by officials with a Pentagon program that investigated U.F.O.s. Read more

Mysterious Object Confirmed To Be From Another Solar System
November 20, 2017
From: https://www.theguardian.com

Astronomers are now certain that the mysterious object detected hurtling past our sun last month is indeed from another solar system. They have named it 1I/2017 U1(Oumuamua) and believe it could be one of 10,000 others lurking undetected in our cosmic neighbourhood. The certainty of its interstellar origin comes from an analysis that shows its orbit is almost impossible to achieve from within our solar system. Read more

This Is Tesla's Big New All-electric Truck - The Tesla Semi
November 16, 2017
From: https://techcrunch.com

Tesla has unveiled its all-electric semi truck, aptly dubbed the 'Tesla Semi,' as promised, and the resulting Class 8 transport vehicle is indeed a sight to behold. The Tesla Semi will go 0 to 60 mph in just 5 seconds, which is incredibly fast compared to a diesel truck. It can go 0 to 60 mph towing 80,000 lbs, its max tow load, in just 20 seconds. It can go 65 mph up a 5 percent grade, which is way better than the 45 mph max that a diesel competitor can do. And for range, it can go 500 miles at highway speed, and less than 80 percent trips are at 250 miles. It also has a better drag coefficient than a super car thanks to its extremely aerodynamic design.

The real secret weapon of the truck, however, isn't that it can turn into a giant fighting robot (this feature hasn't been activated yet, if it does exist, and Tesla won't admit that it does). Instead, it's that the truck offers a transmission that requires no shifting of gears (as is normal for fully electric vehicles) with regenerative braking that provides "basically infinite" brake life per Tesla. Half of the Universe's Missing Matter Found
October 12, 2017
From: http://www.unexplained-mysteries.com

A long-standing mystery concerning the whereabouts of the universe's missing matter has been solved. Based on measurements of the background radiation left over from the Big Bang, scientists believe that around 5% of the mass of the universe is made up of ordinary matter - the type that we ourselves consist of as well as all the asteroids, planets, stars and galaxies that we see through our telescopes.

Adding up the mass of all the objects in the observable universe however produces a figure that is as little as a tenth of the expected amount - so where did all the rest of the matter go? Read more

Evidence of a Massive Lake Discovered on Mars
October 11, 2017
From: http://www.unexplained-mysteries.com

NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has identified the site of an ancient lake on the Red Planet's surface. Mars might be a cold, barren wasteland today, but millions of years ago its surface would have been awash with rivers and lakes of liquid water that could have potentially supported primitive life.

Now scientists have discovered even more concrete evidence of the planet's watery past in the form of a colossal lake that would have held ten times as much water as all the Great Lakes combined. Read more

NASA Data Shows Moon Had Atmosphere and Lots of Volcanoes
October 5, 2017
From: https://www.earthfiles.com

Marshall Space Flight Center's Debra Needham, Ph.D., and Universities Space Research Assoc.'s David Kring, Ph.D., have calculated the amounts of gases that erupted with lava from lunar volcanoes 3.5 billion years ago that formed an atmosphere around the moon that had lots of water in it. Dr. Needham reports, "The total amount of H2O released during the emplacement of the mare basalts is nearly twice the volume of water in Lake Tahoe. Although much of this vapor would have been lost to space, a significant fraction might have made its way to the lunar poles. This means some of the lunar polar gases we see at the poles might have originated inside the moon." It also means there might be valuable water ice at the lunar poles for the first human bases on the moon.

Archaeologists Solve The Mystery Of The Great Pyramid
September 23, 2017
From: http://www.dailymail.co.uk

It has for centuries been one of the world's greatest enigmas: how a Bronze Age society with little in the way of technology created Egypt's Great Pyramid of Giza -- the oldest and only survivor of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Now archaeologists have discovered fascinating proof that shows how the Egyptians transported 2.5-ton blocks of limestone and granite from 500 miles away to build the tomb of Pharaoh Khufu in about 2,600 BC.

At 481 ft tall, it is the biggest of all the pyramids and was, until the Middle Ages, the largest man-made structure on Earth. Now the discovery of an ancient papyrus, a ceremonial boat and an ingenious system of waterworks have shed light on the infrastructure created by the builders. Read more
